Who can perform these steps: Primary administrators and administrators with permission to manage member permissions.
Search permissions control what results a member will see when searching for other members on Lark. For security reasons, many organizations limit members' search permissions.
For example, a large company with many subsidiaries may prefer that the members of a subsidiary can only search for colleagues within their subsidiaries when using Lark.
II. Steps
Go to Lark Admin Console > Security > Member Permissions > Search permissions.

Permission settings are divided into Main rule and the Supplementary rule sections.

Main rule
There are two options for the main rule:
  • No restrictions
  • Consistent with visible scope of the organizational structure
No restrictions
After selecting No restrictions for the main rule, members will be able to search for other members by any of the visible fields in members' profiles. These may include name, alias, contact email, alias, staff ID, contact number, department, business email, city, country/region, personnel type, position, work station, extension number and so on.
Primary administrators and administrators with member profile permissions can go to Organization > Member Profile > Fields filters to set which fields can be searched.

If Department is set as a searchable field, then you'll see two options when you select No restrictions for the main rule:
  • When searching by department, restrict search scope to visibility scope of the organization (recommended): Members will only be able to use the department field to search for people who appear in their Contacts. Depending on the administrator's choices, organization visibility rules may vary from member to member.
  • When searching by department, allow members to search all departments in the organization (proceed with caution): Members will be able to search for any member using the department field.
Consistent with visible scope of the organizational structure
Members will only be able to search for people in Contacts.

Supplementary rule
Members on the List of users who can't search anyone will not be able to search for anyone within the organization.
Members on the List of users who can't be searched will not be able to be found through search.
III. FAQs
If I've chosen "No restrictions" as the main rule and added users to the supplementary rule, which takes priority?
The supplementary rule has a higher priority than the main rule. For example, if No restrictions is set as the main rule, but you've added Member A to the List of users who can't search anyone in the supplementary rule, then Member A won't be able to search for anyone. However, everyone else will have no restrictions.
If I've restricted Member A from searching for Member B, can Member A see messages from Member B?
Yes. Search permissions control a user's ability to search for other users. However, users can find other members via group chats, documents, or meetings.
Can I add an entire department to a supplementary rule?
No, you can only add users one by one in the supplementary rule, with a maximum of 10,000 users. User groups also can't be added.
Why can't I search for messages when I'm disconnected from the network?
Once search permissions have been set, offline searching will be unavailable. You won't be able to search for users, groups, bots, and messages when you are disconnected from the network.
Note: If No restrictions is set as the main rule and no supplementary rule is defined, search permissions will be considered to be turned off and offline searching will still be possible.
