Admin | Set up Wi-Fi attendance (based on MAC address)

I. Intro
🔖
Who can perform these steps: Primary administrators and administrators with Attendance management permissions.
Through Lark Attendance, organizations can allow their employees to record their attendance by clocking in/out when connected to a specified Wi-Fi network.
To do so, administrators should enter the network's MAC address in the Attendance Admin.
II. Steps
Important: Please ensure you enter the entire MAC address correctly. If the MAC address is incomplete or incorrect, members won't be able to clock in/out. For further details, see How to find the Wi-Fi name and MAC address
Go to attendance group settings
To enable clock in/out by wifi, administrators can either create a new group, or edit an existing group.
To create a new group, go to the Attendance admin console > Attendance Settings > Group Settings and click Add Attendance Group to create a new group. To edit an existing group, click Details to the right of its name on the Group Settings page.

Enter the MAC address
There are three ways to enter the MAC address: manually, bulk import, and mobile scan.
Add manually
Manually enter the Wi-Fi name and MAC address one by one in the Attendance Admin.
  1. Click New MAC Address.
  1. In the pop-up, enter the Wi-Fi name and MAC address, and click Confirm when done. For further details, see How to find the Wi-Fi name and MAC address
  1. If you need to add one or more further networks, repeat steps 1 and 2.

Bulk import
You can use an Excel spreadsheet template to bulk import MAC addresses, which makes it easier to add multiple networks at once.
  1. Click Import MAC address.
  1. In the pop-up window, click Export to download the template.
  1. Enter the Wi-Fi name and MAC address in the spreadsheet. For more details, see How to find the Wi-Fi name and MAC address
  1. In the pop-up, click Import to upload the completed spreadsheet.
Note: If a network has already been added to the attendance group, and it is subsequently included in an imported Excel spreadsheet, the original MAC address will be deleted and replaced with the one contained in the imported spreadsheet.

Scan with mobile
Use your phone to scan nearby Wi-Fi networks and add their MAC addresses. This method can only add Wi-Fi networks to existing attendance groups.
  1. Open the Attendance app on your phone, and go to Settings > Group settings > Manage Wi-Fi.
  1. Tap the existing attendance group you wish to edit and tap Add Wi-Fi.
  1. Select the Wi-Fi network you wish to add and tap Confirm.
Note:
  1. Due to system limitations, Android users can add all Wi-Fi networks that can be scanned, but iOS users can only add the Wi-Fi network to which they're currently connected.

III. FAQs
What is a MAC address?
A MAC, or media access control, address is the unique physical address of the Wi-Fi device. Each Wi-Fi device has its own corresponding MAC address. Different Wi-Fi networks may have the same name, but their MAC addresses will always be different.
How can I find the Wi-Fi name and MAC address?
Administrators can use the following 2 methods:
  • Method 1 (recommended): Ask your organization's IT department for the complete Wi-Fi name and MAC address.
  • Method 2: Once you've added yourself to an attendance group, open the Attendance app on your phone and go to Settings > Personal settings > Current device info. The SSID is the Wi-Fi name and the BSSID is the MAC address.
Why are some members unable to clock in/out when connected to one of the organization's Wi-Fi networks?
The Wi-Fi network the employee is connected to may not have been entered in Attendance Admin, or its MAC address may have been entered incorrectly. Employees and administrators can use the following solution:
  1. The employee provides the administrator with the Wi-Fi information: The employee uses the Lark Attendance app on their phone and goes to Settings > Personal settings > Current device info, and gives the administrator the SSID and BSSID (i.e., the Wi-Fi name and MAC address).
  1. The administrator enters the Wi-Fi network information into the Admin Console: The administrator goes to the Attendance Admin, finds the group the employee is in, and enters the Wi-Fi network information provided by the employee in the group settings. (See Method 1: Manual addition above for reference).
Why can some members clock in/out when they are not connected to the specified Wi-Fi network(s)?
To avoid missing any MAC addresses set by the administrator, Lark will automatically scan all nearby Wi-Fi networks when an Android user opens the Attendance app. Therefore, if an employee has Wi-Fi enabled on their phone and the specified Wi-Fi can be found, they'll still be able to clock in/out without being connected to the specified Wi-Fi.
Note: Due to system limitations, iOS devices cannot automatically scan for all nearby Wi-Fi networks and must be connected to the specified Wi-Fi network to be able to clock in/out.
Why are some Android users unable to clock in/out by Wi-Fi?
Due to system limitations, some Android users must enable location permissions to be able to clock in/out by Wi-Fi.
