View, reopen, and delete archived comments

Who can perform these steps:
  • Users with edit permissions for the document can view and reopen archived comments.
  • Users with manage permissions for the document can view, reopen, and permanently delete archived comments.
When a comment is resolved, or when the content to which the comment is referring is deleted, the comment will be archived in Comment History and will no longer appear in the document. Edit permission is required to view and reopen archived comments and manage permission is required to delete archived comments.
II. Steps
View comment history
  1. Open the document, hover over the icon in the upper-right corner, and click Comment History.
  1. From here, you can see the location, commenter, and content of the comment, as well as the reason for archiving (typically because the comment was deleted or resolved).

Reopen archived comments

Notice:
  • When you reopen an archived comment, it will reappear in the document.
  • If a comment was archived because the corresponding content was deleted, it cannot be reopened..
  1. Open the document, hover over the icon in the upper-right corner, and click Comment History.
  1. Find the comment you want to reopen, then click Reopen.

  1. Find the comment you want to delete, then click the Delete Comment icon.

IV. FAQs
Who can resolve or delete comments?
  • Users who can comment in a document can resolve anyone's comments, but can only delete their own.
  • Users with managing permissions for the document can resolve or delete anyone's comments.
Will comments deleted by the commenter be archived?
No. These comments cannot be viewed or restored.
Why can't I find a comment in Comment History?
The comment may have been deleted by the person who left the comment, meaning it wasn't archived. Alternatively, a user with manage permission may have deleted the comment after it was archived.
